Benevolent Neglect

Benevolent Neglect

Matt and Ben are two East Coast escapees who have made California their home and making superb wines their vocation. Matt’s day job was making 100 point Parker wines ($400 for a GTS anyone?) … his passion is Benevolent Neglect. The mission they chose to accept : “find the best quality fruit we can get our hands on, and then do as little as possible to it.

Benevolent Neglect Riesling 2019
£41.00

Mendocino, California

Probably the most in demand of all of our wines with some of the UK’s finest sommeliers in all corners of the country!

Sourced from a 45 year old site up near Ukiah, nearly 200m above sea level. Fermented long and cool in stainless steel, with the ferment stopped dry, retaining 15.5g/l R.S. It’s exceptionally well balanced by high acidity, and a wonderfully composed wine. This is the last ever vintage of this wine, the farmer ripped up the vines and replaced them with Chardonnay stock after the 2019 harvest.

Established by east coast boys, Ben Brenner and Matt Nagy, Benevolent Neglect got their break when winemaker Matt was fortunate to be offered some Syrah from the legendary Las Madres vineyard in 2013. Matt had previously produced eleven 100-point wines at Maybach, whilst Ben works at Rutherford Wine Co. As the name suggests, they work with as little intervention as possible, “to be the reliable translator from what was made in the vineyard from sun, water and soil, and gently let it become finest wine possible.

Benevolent Neglect Ribolla Gialla 2019
£50.00

Oak Knoll, Napa Valley

A skin contact white that is all about the spice and rocky, mineral notes, rather than overt fruit. A little nutmeg, root ginger, toasted almonds and blossom. A real thinking wine.

The second vintage of this wine from Benevolent Neglect from the famous Bengier vineyard in Oak Knoll. Fermented using a submerged cap for minimal extraction.

Ribolla Gialla is an ancient variety that originated in Greece, and is mostly found in the north eastern Italy and across the border in Slovenia, where it is known as Rebula. Little seen elsewhere, this is really rather rare.

Benevolent Neglect Chardonnay 2019
£47.00

Matt and Ben totally nailed it again … this is recognisably Californian Chardonnay with a lightness of being. Milan Kundera with lemon meringue. Is that your thing? Is it anyone's? Doesn't matter. This wine is brilliant a real show stopper and you will definitely not regret drinking it.

Benevolent Neglect Whole Cluster Syrah 2018
£60.00

ONLY 17 Remaining as of October 12th

Sonoma Carneros, Sonoma County

Made in only the best vintages, the Whole Cluster Syrah has an invigorating nose of violets, black olives, both fresh and tapenade and sweet loose leaf tea. Squashy mulberries, with a surprisingly lithe, blue and black fruited palate with a dark spiced element - dark chocolate dipped orange peel and pot pourri. Exceptionally smooth and complete, even at this young age. Lavish and lingering.

Matt and Ben, the two immensely talented boys behind Benevolent Neglect have landed something of a coup to secure the backing the Las Madres growers. It all started when they met John Painter and Jean Gadiot, who have owned the Las Madres vineyard since its inception. To give a little history, John and Jean converted overgrown pasture land into what is now the Las Madres site - a beautiful VSP trellised, cool-climate Syrah vineyard with two distinct blocks, amongst a sea of Chardonnay and Pinot. This site is a serious labour of love, farmed entirely by hand and organically, with minimal to no irrigation.

Benevolent Neglect Las Madres Syrah 2019
£65.00

If you are going to have a house wine, may as well make it a duplex penthouse overlooking the ocean. The boys nail this wine year in year out. Using the famous Las Madres Fruit to wonderful effect, the 40% whole cluster is a more approachable and easy going wine compared to the more serious 100% Whole Cluster premium cuvee. But boy oh boy, what a wine it is. Parmaviolets and dark berries on the nose with a hint of olive reflecting the touch of stems and stalks. The palate opens up with a hint of vanillin and then the richly blue and black fruits quickly stream in one after the other, blueberries, blackcurrant, mulberry, dark cherry ... with a distinctive dark chocolate finish which is the hallmark of this great vineyard.

Benevolent Neglect Counoise 2021
£45.00

North Coast, California

Little strawberries sprinkled with black pepper, pink peppercorns and ripe red currant coulis. Restrained and light in body, lashing of freshness, with a bit of grip to balance it.

The 2021 Counoise is simply labelled as “North Coast,” as grapes are sourced from two different vineyards. 50% from a young site just northwest of Napa, that was in fact planted as a group effort by Steve Matthiasson, Jack Roberts of Keep and the Benevolent Neglect boys themselves. The other 50% is from one of the first official Counoise plantings in Mendocino - a site planted in the early 90s.

Benevolent Neglect Fiasco 2019
£43.00

Pet Nat bubbles. Fiano, Refosco, Nero D'Avola, Furmint, Chardonnay … obviously, what else would it be?? Some time on skins, some texture, some delicious savoury notes, peachy tones, gentle fizz which lasts nicely. A humdinger of a wine!
