A joint venture between winemaker Martin Smith and businessman Ndabe Mareda, their goal is to produce fine wines that are truly authentic to the place and people that made them. They call both Franschhoek and Tulbagh home, with a beautiful tasting room and some vineyards in the much loved foodie town of Franschhoek, and a recently purchased farm in the lesser known region of Tulbagh. It is here where self confessed Cabernet junkie Martin sees the greatest potential for the grape in the Cape, and where they are planting for the future. The name derives from the Latin Passeriformes, the type of bird that includes swifts, swallows and martins; all birds that follow the epic migration from Europe to South Africa, representing the often travelled route by young winemakers gaining experience abroad before returning to their home country. Namibian born Lucinda Heyns first studied viticulture in South Africa before heading across to the States to gain valuable experience with the likes of Raj Parr, Sashi Moorman and at Screaming Eagle. Returning to the Cape, she worked as a viticulturist at Jordan estate and Mulderbosch, founding Illimis Wines in 2015. Illimis is the Latin for clarity, which underpins her philosophy of winemaking, minimal intervention and integrity of fruit from the vineyard all the way into the bottle. Being a viticulturist at heart, she believes that everything starts with the vines. Every vintage is unique, and her hope is that every wine is a tribute to the endless pursuit of refining the potential of each site the Illimis wines are made from. A property at the highest point just south of Beechworth came on the market in 2012 which they promptly snapped up. This untouched site came complete with 18 hectares of prime land, a lake and an abandoned gold mine. So far they’ve planted 2 ha of vines at medium density dominated by Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir, with small parcels of Riesling and Nebbiolo. Sustainability and organic viticulture is key here - Tessa has plans to integrate a mix of crops, trees and plants to optimise carbon sequestration and soil microbiology, as well as developing the ecoystem and biodiversity on the farm. These wines are in high demand and we are excpetionally fortunate to represent them in the UK. Whilst they are waiting for their own vines to mature, they have been producing wine from their neighbour’s sites, as well as in the King Valley and Alpine Valleys. Quite the title for winemaker Evan Frazier, who first cut his teeth on winemaking in the 2006 harvest in the Roussillon. So enamoured by his experience with arms up to the elbows in fermentations, the old vines and steep schist slopes, Evan made the move to Napa to continue an apprenticeship in winemaking. Fast forward several years, and Evan is now working as assistant winemaker for the mighty Kongsgaard dynasty as well as producing wine under his own label, Ferdinand. Although it was France where he first worked, it was in the Cathar and Catalan country just outside the Pyrenees with a strong Spanish influence. When beginning his own project, he looked to Spain and their cultivars for inspiration, choosing to produce an Albarino and Tempranillo. Evan’s wines walk a tightrope between their Spanish heritage and Californian interpretation, with the utmost respect to the fruit and the vineyard. Jack and JJ both come with quite the wine making pedigree, with Jack having worked as assistant winemaker at Matthiasson Wines for 1many years, and JJ being an alumni of The Scholium Project and Broc Cellars. Like all our producers, farming and attention to the land is a priority, with Jack farming a few vineyards himself organically, and all others they buy from being certified. Winemaking is with a light hand and without additives, with the exception of SO2 in small quantities. If you are wondering where the name “Keep” comes, look at the crest on the label. It is a depiction of Beverstone Castle, a 10th century Norman stronghold in Gloucestershire, where Jack’s father was raised. All that remains of the castle today is what you see on the crest, the moat and the tall keep (from the middle English “kype,” or barrel.
