Stand Alone Pinot Noir 2015

Red Wines

The red wines we've listed all have a common theme.  Rich powerful tastes associated with the New World (you'll find lots of big and bold black fruits with notes of cocoa, espresso and liquorice) - but they will surprise you.  They have secondary notes you won't expect.  We've got some balsamic, some dried herbs and some crushed red pepper.

This is the vanguard of the new wave of South African wine, and if you like red wine, you've come to the right place.

Stand Alone Pinot Noir 2015

Upper Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa

Hemel-en-Aarde, or heaven on earth as it translates to in English. The ultimate cool climate region of South Africa famed for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Winemaker Alexander splits the 20% whole bunch at the bottom (Tutti Frutti flavours) and the top of the tank (Campari spice) for more complexity. Aged for 10 months in large old oak barrels.

Crunchy and fresh with a tight tannic structure and bright fruit strawberry, cherry and dried sour-sweet cranberry notes. A bitter sweet blood orange and rosemary edge, with liquorice bootlaces and a hint of cacao nib. Fine beaded acidity and elegant tannins. Totally drop dead gorgeous.

Xander Grier, son of extreme adventurer and chef David, is winemaker at Villiera in Stellenbosch (where his uncle Simon is viticulturist) but also makes his own Pinot Noir under the Stand Alone label. Current release is the 2015, fruit from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. The nose shows rose water and cherry while the palate is light-bodied (alcohol: 13.5%) with fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish gently savoury. It’s a pretty and very appealing take on the variety.

Winemag.co.za Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Xander Grier stems from the Villiera family – his day job sees him make half a million bottles of MCC a year! Whilst Villiera makes the most of modern technology and winemaking equipment, Stand Alone is back to basics - working by hand and foot, with the help of gravity in the cellar, and no additions other than minimal sulphur. Stand Alone is his, er, attempt to stand alone.  Xander drew the picture on the label of an old tree struck by lighting on his Grand Father property.
