Paserene Marathon 2016

Red Wines

The red wines we've listed all have a common theme.  Rich powerful tastes associated with the New World (you'll find lots of big and bold black fruits with notes of cocoa, espresso and liquorice) - but they will surprise you.  They have secondary notes you won't expect.  We've got some balsamic, some dried herbs and some crushed red pepper.

This is the vanguard of the new wave of South African wine, and if you like red wine, you've come to the right place.

Paserene Marathon 2016

46.00

Western Cape, South Africa

Follow the Swallow. A future icon of South Africa from Martin Smith and the Paserene family. Marathon is their flagship blend; a wine that sells out like hot cakes as soon as it lands. The 2016 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Petit Verdot and 5% Carménère sourced from Stellenbosch, Tulbagh and Darling, fermented in oak. The Carmenere is in fact sourced from the only known vineyard in South Africa! It ferments and spends 22 months in barrel - 50% new French oak, with a further year spent in bottle prior to release. Bottled unfined and unfltered. The beautiful label is painted by the incredibly talented Lorraine Loots, representing the winemaker's relentless pursuit of acquiring knowledge in South Africa and California to produce his style of wines, just like the travelling swallow.

Drop.dead.gorgeous. A staggeringly multi layered wine; a masterclass in the art of blending. Deep ruby purple in the glass, with dark preserved fruits, fresh black cherries and camphor on the nose. Unapologetically luxurious and lavish, with it’s cascading fruit, cedar, liquroice and rocky-lavender palate, but still fresh and very fine - it begs another sip. Well integrated, sweet edged tannins. Looking for something to cellar for 10-15 years or that extra special present? Here’s the bottle….
