Red Wines

The red wines we've listed all have a common theme.  Rich powerful tastes associated with the New World (you'll find lots of big and bold black fruits with notes of cocoa, espresso and liquorice) - but they will surprise you.  They have secondary notes you won't expect.  We've got some balsamic, some dried herbs and some crushed red pepper.

This is the vanguard of the new wave of South African wine, and if you like red wine, you've come to the right place.

Paserene Marathon

Paserene’s Marathon blends the only use of Carménère in South Africa with a Petit Verdot into a refined, complex and balanced Red Wine of the highest quality.

About the Taste

The unusual blends of the wine in the expert hands of wine maker Martin Smith make for an exquisitely balanced intense red wine which leads with bright energetic fruit - abundant aromas of blackberries, sweet cassis, chocolate, liquorice and espresso roast.  Secondary to that the wine reveals a beautiful spice fraction with balsamic and a hint of pine seed aroma.  The wine has a majestic richness on the palate accompanied with a beautifully crafted soft and supple tannin structure.  Decanting recommended.

About the Production

The Carménère is the grape of legends.  Extremely difficult to grow and once thought extinct it is believed by some to be the grape from which all red Bordeaux grapes originated. Paserene are the only producer using the grape in South Africa, Martin specifically selected the grape for its qualities and had the fruit registered with the South African board of Agriculture.  A highly prized blending wine, the grape brings deep red colour, cherry-like fruit and smoky, spicy and earthy notes.

The Petit Verdot is a late ripening fruit and another challenging grape to grow.  It is used to accentuate and highlight, with a little going a long way.  Correctly applied Petit Verdot brings dense fruit, dark colour and powerful flavours.

The grapes were fermented in small upright French oak barrels and carefully punched down not to over-extract the wine.  They were then matured in 30% new oak for 16 months, before clarification and bottling without filtration to preserve its natural form.  The wine has spent one year in bottle before release to give it a chance to bed all the flavours in and start to develop the complexity it was designed for.

About Paserene

Paserene is the passion of Master Wine Maker Martin Smith (formerly of Vilafonté and now dedicating his time to Paserene).  He currently produces 5,000 bottles a year of two varietals – the excellent Chardonnay and the stunning Bordeaux Blend.  Two more wines are promised from this excellent vineyard – a Syrah (which has been in barrel for over three years now) and a Cabernet Sauvignon, both of which promise to be exceptional.

Paserene have taken a best of breed approach and have multiple parcels of land which enables them to cherry pick the very best condition to make excellent grapes for the wines they want to make. The Carménère is grown in a dedicated plot in Tygerberg, something of a hidden gem in the South African wine scene – in close proximity to both the Atlantic ocean and False Bay with its south easterly winds, the region is very highly regarded for producing cool climate red grapes with highly concentrated flavours. The Petit Verdot is grown in the heart of Stellenbosch, equally renowned, if more traditionally so, for its high quality Bordeaux grapes.
