Dunnigan Hills, Yolo County

Tendu tendu! This is the second label from Jill and Steve Matthiasson, who are better known for their pure, balanced wines with some pretty high end price tags and scarcity due to the immense demand for them. As well as producing these wines, Steve also consults for some of California's biggest names, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and the Long Term Wine Co (also available from Nekter!) Away from all these fancy titles and wines, the Tendu brand was created to produce the ultimate Californian bbq wine -high quality fruit, hand crafted to create something fun, fresh and easy drinking. Tendu translates as tense, and these are vibrant wines, with a crown cap and in an extra fun 1 litre bottle.

From a warm site at moderate elevation planted on pink, gravelly soils, the Italian varieties that were grafted on to Merlot vines really thrive here. Very simple winemaking, fermented in stainless steel and transferred to old barrels for a brief ageing period. Bottled without sulphur additions or any fining or filtration.

Totally and utterly delightful, and as Steve says “the ultimate bbq wine!” This is one even for those who don’t like red wine, as it’s got such verve and energy and lightness. Serve lightly chilled for ultimate deliciousness! Fruity, but not sweet, with plenty of bright red berries, raspberry coulis and dried sage. Divine with bruschetta, nduja and tomato pasta, charcuterie or grilled meats.

Press: This is delicious bright, pure and sappy with lovely red cherries and raspberries, and a bit of sappy greenness. So pretty with good acidity and lovely crunchy fruit. So fine and fresh and smashable. 90/100 . Dr Jamie Goode, The Wine Anorak.
