Wonderwall Wine Co Pinot Noir 2017

28.00

Central Coast, California

The Wonderwall Pinot is partially de-stemmed upon arrival, with around 25% stems included in the open top fermenter depending on the vineyard block.  Aged in 100% French Oak with 15% new.

More lifted, purer and elegant than the 2016, how fab! Hedgerow fruits, plum jam, just baked figs, cola. There’s a whiff of smoke and tantalising black tea, with white pepper, clove and cinnamon. Juicy and succulent palate - a beautifully composed and balanced wine - it's almost like being out in the vineyards, glass in hand!

Wonderwall Pinot Noir may come under a different name, but is in fact a sub brand from Field Recordings guru and winemaker, Andrew Jones. These wines are from special vineyards owned by people who he has bonded with on his many hours on the road in the Central Coast. They speak of these sites, these friendships, and happy times spent together.

Spending his days as a vine nursery fieldman planning and planting vineyards for farmers all over California, Andrew is sometimes offered small lots of their best fruit on the side. Having stood in just about every vineyard on the Central Coast, he has a keen eye for diamonds in the rough: sites that are unknown or under-appreciated but hold enormous untapped potential.

Each year, the label changes - Andrew selecting images of people who have done things differently. They’ve broken the rules, walked out of line and done extraordinary things, whatever the odds. Past labels have included Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo. The 2017 bears the image of the Bennett Sisters, female boxing champions of Brooklyn in the early 20th century. In an article published in 1913, the sisters were described as “pretty and perfectly formed girls giving remarkable exhibitions in the art of boxing, fencing, and wrestling.  There is the charm of youth, a girlish grace and a refreshing daintiness in their performance, despite its character, which suggest the work of well-trained athletes. The Bennett Sisteres are splendid specimens of womanhood and prove the advantages gained by physical culture exploits.” Hail Bennett sisters!
