We really really love Keep Wines and what they are doing. They were the couple that Jon worked harvest with and gained some of his most important cellar experience with. Their philosophy and attitude to winemaking and farming is extremely closely aligned with ours, and we are really excited to see the variety of wines they produce and how they grow. Expect less new oak, less excessive ripeness, and sometimes even a little funk with these wines. Here’s a chance to try a selection from Keep. The different labels you may ask? Jack and JJ decided to rebrand and design new labels in 2018. Nothing else has changed though, apart from perhaps the wines getting even better….
Keep Delta White 2018. A 50/50 blend of Falanghina and Cortese from a Sacramento River Delta vineyard that ferments and mature solely in stainless steel. Starts super linear in the glass, with delicate salty green apple crunch and almost Chablis esque characteristics. Let it warm in the glass a little and breathe, perhaps even double decant a few times, and it fleshes out beautifully in to something with a more unctuous profile of apple blossom, creme anglaise and more rounded characteristics. It still has that superb whip crack acid and salty lick, but a wine of more depth for sure.
The Rose is from the Kahn Vineyard, a site that Jack and JJ have farmed since 2012, and is certified organic. A stunning 25 year old site surrounded by olive groves on the edge of Napa/Sonoma. A Syrah rose that has developed beautifully into a slightly oxidised, blood orange, nutty wine with some serious crunch and texture. A rose of complexity.
The red is also from the Kahn Vineyard - a 100% Syrah scored in Augus 2019’s Decanter with 92 points. “Eucalyptus and a touch of cassis, between Shiraz and Syrah, on the nose. A touch of liquorice and sweet spice beneath. Cool fruit, well balanced. Tannins a little grainy from 50% whole cluster. Restrained, unforced, with developing complexity. “
